WHEN SHOULD ORTHODONTICS BE CONSIDERED

An orthodontic examination should be considered at any time a parent, a referring dentist, or a person believes there may be a problem or a developing problem with the positions of the teeth or jaws.

For children, it is common to have a first evaluation around the age of 7. In some circumstances, early treatment may be to the benefit of the patient. Other times, it may be necessary to follow the child’s dental and facial development in order to determine the optimum time to provide orthodontic treatment. Most children wear orthodontic appliances between the ages of 10 and 16.

It is important to understand that early recognition of orthodontic problems can often lead to better orthodontic treatment results.

THE FIRST CONSULTATION APPOINTMENT

The purpose of the first appointment is to meet the patient and the patient’s family. At that time the orthodontist will perform a brief oral examination of the patient to determine if orthodontic treatment is advisable and if it is the appropriate time to commence treatment. The orthodontist will then discuss the preliminary findings with the patient and the family. If treatment is recommended, the orthodontist will advise the collection of diagnostic information to allow for the analysis of the orthodontic problem and the design of a treatment plan.

THE SECOND CONSULTATION APPOINTMENT

At this appointment the orthodontist will discuss the orthodontic issues and the treatment recommendations with the patient and the parent. This is an excellent time for both the parent and the patient to ask questions regarding orthodontic treatment.

COSTS

The fees associated with orthodontic treatment are similar to fees found in many of the large cities in the United States. The actual fee for any individual patient would of course be dependent upon the orthodontic treatment required to treat the patient’s problem.
